ATLAS
Morocco family trek: what age, which massif
Published 7 October 2026
Walking the Atlas as a family works far earlier than people expect — as long as you give up the summit and choose the valley. Here is the verdict as we hear it from the agencies.
From what age?
- From 6–7: valley stages of 3 to 4 hours, moderate ascent, a night in a gîte. The mule carries everything, including a tired child over a short section.
- From 10–12: bivouacs, passes at 2,500–3,000 m, days of 5 to 6 hours.
- The Toubkal summit (4,167 m): not before the teenage years, and only with real walking habit behind it. Altitude does not negotiate with enthusiasm.
A family trek succeeds when the stage is too short, not when it is just long enough.
The valleys that work best
- The Imlil valley and lower villages: quick access from Marrakech, plenty of gîtes, a way back down every evening.
- Aït Bouguemez, the "Happy Valley": flat, inhabited, farmed. The most forgiving ground in the High Atlas.
- The long traverses and the river gorges can wait a few years.
The verdict, month by month
- April – June: the best window. Valleys in blossom, mild temperatures, long days.
- September – October: very good. Dry trails, long light, cold nights — bring a proper bag.
- July – August: hot below 2,500 m. Early starts, shade at midday, shortened stages.
- November – March: out of season at altitude. Stay in the lower villages, or change massif.
What to ask the agency
- The trip's minimum age, in writing.
- The real length of each stage, in child walking hours — not adult ones.
- An extra mule if needed, and what it costs.
- The plan B for a tired day: how far back down, and how.
