Best time to climb Toubkal, month by month — honestly

Toubkal (4,167 m) can be climbed year-round — but not by everyone, and never in the same conditions. Here is our month-by-month verdict, with the reason attached, as we hear it from the agencies who walk it weekly.

Pick the massif the month deserves, not the month your holiday allows.

The verdict, month by month

September – October · the prime window

  • Dry trails, refuges open, long light.
  • Nights are already cold at the refuge (3,207 m): a −5 °C comfort bag.
  • per [agency], Imlil — to verify

April – June · very good, one caveat

  • Valleys in blossom, ideal daytime temperatures.
  • Snow holds on the pass into May: guides sometimes require crampons.

July – August · possible, with care

  • Serious heat below 2,500 m; afternoon storms are common.
  • Dawn starts are non-negotiable.

November · the in-between

  • First snows possible, quiet refuges, short weather windows.

December – March · technical ascents only

  • Snow and ice: crampons and an ice axe, winter-qualified guiding required.
  • This is no longer a hike — it is easy mountaineering, and we say so plainly.

What the month actually changes

  • The kit your guide requires (crampons, axe, bag rating).
  • Summit start time — often 4 a.m. in summer.
  • Refuge crowds: book early for September–October.

An agency refusing February isn't inflexibility. It's the mountain talking.
